The city of Cochin (now offically known as Kochi), is Kerala's hottest tourist spot, spreading across islands and promontories in a stunning location between the Arabian Sea and backwaters.

Cochin is located towards the bottom on the south west coast of India, in the southern state of Kerala. The city lies at the sea mouth of seven major rivers which start from the Western Ghats and travels through Kerala's midlands, lowlands and coastal areas, to drain out into the Arabian Sea. Earlier, Cochin was used to refer to the region encompassing Mattancherry, Fort Cochin, Palluruthy and Thoppumpadi.

Today, Cochin comprises the mainland Ernakulam, old Cochin, Kadavanthra, the suburbs of Edapally and the exurbia of Kalamassery and Kakkanad to the north east; Tripunithura to the south east; and a group of islands closely scattered in the Vembanad lake.

Cochin lies at the northern end of a narrow neck of land, about 19 km long and less than 1.6 km wide in many places, and is separated from the mainland by inlets from the Arabian Sea and by the estuaries of rivers draining from the Western Ghats. As a result, Cochin is a natural harbour. Much of Cochin lies at the sea level, and the entire city spans an area of 87.5 km. The city has a sea coastline of about 30 miles.

From Mattancherry moving north west from the Mattancherry Palace along Bazaar Road, you see the sight of wholesale shops where owners, sitting behind scales surrounded by sacks of spices. Keep walking in a northerly direction, over the canal and then westwards into Fort Cochin.

The architecture of the quiet streets in this enclave is very definitely European, with fine houses built by wealthy British traders, and Dutch cottages with split farm house doors. At the water's edge there's a bus stand, ferry to Vypin island and food and drinks stalls. A few minutes walk from Fort Cochin, there is also a ferry service to the main land, Ernakulam city.
